How the score is calculated.

Each check passes, needs work or fails. Checks are weighted by how much they affect AI visibility, then rolled up into five area scores and one overall score.

What the score does not tell you

  • It checks one page, not your whole site.
  • It does not run live searches in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
  • Crawler tests use crawler user agents. They are not requests from the providers' own networks.
  • A page that cannot load or carries a noindex tag is capped at 30.
  • No score guarantees citations, rankings or leads.

What AI tools look for in an AEC firm.

The factors that decide who gets recommended, and how strong the evidence is for each one. No one can guarantee AI placement.

1

Crawl access and indexability

Strong evidence

AI answers can only use pages their crawlers can fetch. Google AI features draw on pages that are indexed and eligible to appear in Search.

What to doAllow Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) in robots.txt, and check that your firewall or CDN is not challenging them. Keep key pages free of noindex. Blocking Google-Extended only controls Gemini AI use and does not affect Google Search rankings.

2

A clear, consistent firm entity

Strong evidence

AI tools cross-check your firm name, offices, phone number and disciplines across your site and the wider web. Conflicts lower their confidence.

What to doUse the same firm name, address and phone format everywhere: website footer, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, BBB and industry directories. State the disciplines you offer and the states you work in, in plain words.

3

Deep service and discipline pages

Strong evidence

AI answers quote pages that answer the exact question being asked, such as who designs substations in Texas.

What to doBuild a page for each core service or discipline, for example structural engineering, MEP design, design-build, construction management or permit drawings. Cover scope, process, typical timelines, codes and standards, project types and how to start.

4

Real projects and case studies

Strong evidence

Named projects with a location, size, scope and result are the proof AI tools quote when they recommend a firm.

What to doPublish a page for each notable project: client type, location, square footage or capacity, your role, the challenge, the outcome and photos. Link projects to the matching service pages.

5

Licenses, credentials and named experts

Strong evidence

Owners, developers and procurement teams hire firms they can verify. AI tools look for the same signals.

What to doShow license numbers and the states you are licensed in, insurance and bonding, and credentials such as PE, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP or OSHA. Add bios with real names and photos of principals and key staff.

6

Google Business Profile and reviews

Strong evidence

Google Maps and local AI answers lean on your profile and on reviews that mention the work you did.

What to doChoose the right primary category (for example Engineer, Architect or General contractor), list every service, add office photos and project photos, and ask clients for reviews that mention the project type and city. Reply to every review.

7

Location and market pages

Moderate evidence

Many searches name a city or state. Pages that show real local work match them better than thin copies.

What to doOnly for offices and markets you truly serve, write a page with local projects, licenses held in that state, local codes or permitting notes and a local contact. Never publish copy-paste doorway pages.

8

Question-led content with direct answers

Moderate evidence

AI assistants favour pages that answer a question in the first sentence and then add detail.

What to doAdd FAQs and guides such as how long a commercial permit takes, when a project needs stamped drawings, and what drives design or construction cost. Lead with a direct answer of 40 to 60 words.

9

Mentions on trusted third-party sites

Strong evidence

Assistants that browse the web pull from directories, associations, trade press and partner sites, not only from your own site.

What to doKeep your LinkedIn company page, BBB, Houzz, Clutch and association listings (AIA chapter, ACEC, AGC, ABC) complete and consistent. Earn mentions in trade press, project announcements and partner sites.

10

Structured data

Moderate evidence

Schema gives machines your firm facts in a clean, unambiguous format.

What to doAdd Organization plus ProfessionalService or GeneralContractor schema with address, phone, areaServed, logo, founder and sameAs links. Use FAQPage only for questions that are visible on the page. Do not mark up your own reviews of your own firm.

11

Text visible without JavaScript, fast and mobile friendly

Moderate evidence

Many AI crawlers read raw HTML and do not run scripts.

What to doKeep key content, your phone number and your service list in the HTML rather than in scripts, sliders or images. Compress project photos and keep pages fast on mobile.

12

Fresh, real proof

Moderate evidence

Out-of-date pages and generic stock content lower trust.

What to doShow updated dates, recent projects, real site photos and short project notes. Remove old team members, expired certifications and stale news.

13

llms.txt file

Emerging evidence

No major AI provider has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to decide who to recommend.

What to doPublishing a short, accurate llms.txt is cheap and may help some tools, but treat it as a small bonus after the factors above.

AI visibility questions.

Straight answers about the checker and AI search for AEC firms.

Ask a question
What is an AI visibility checker for AEC firms?
It scans one page of your website and shows whether AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot can reach it, understand it and trust it enough to recommend your architecture, engineering or construction firm. It also checks the signals that matter for AEC firms, such as the disciplines you name, your service area, your licenses and your project proof.
Can this tool guarantee that AI will recommend my firm?
No. Nobody can guarantee placement or citations in AI answers. Results change by question, by location and over time. The checker shows what is stopping AI tools from finding and trusting you, and what to fix first.
What does the audit check?
Five areas: AI crawler access, technical setup, content and structure, entity and trust, and AEC firm signals. It also reads your page the way an AI assistant would and shows how it describes your firm. You get a score, a ranked fix list, a PDF report and a share link.
Which AI crawlers does it test?
It reads your robots.txt rules for 14 AI crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google, Microsoft, Apple and others, and tests whether your firewall lets the main ones through.
How do AEC firms get recommended in AI search?
Start with the basics AI tools rely on: crawlable pages, one clear firm entity, a page for every core service, real project case studies, visible licenses and credentials, named experts, a complete Google Business Profile and consistent listings on trusted sites. The factors section on this page explains each one and how well-supported it is.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional. No major AI provider has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to decide who to recommend. It is cheap to publish and the checker can draft one for you, but fix access, service pages and project proof first.
Is this a live ChatGPT or Google AI ranking test?
No. The scan checks how ready your website is to be found, read and trusted. It does not run live searches in AI tools. Use the prompt tester on this page to record real mentions for the questions your clients ask.
How is the score calculated?
AI crawler access counts for 25%, technical setup 20%, content and structure 20%, entity and trust 15%, and AEC firm signals 20%. A page that cannot be loaded or carries a noindex tag is capped at 30. This is our scoring system, not a formula used by any AI provider.
Do I need to allow training crawlers to show up in AI search?
Not always. Search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot are separate from training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot. Blocking training is a business choice. Blocking search crawlers removes you from AI answers.
What data do you store?
To create your share link we store the page address you checked, the results and your IP address, which is used only to limit abuse. Public text from the page may be sent to an AI provider for the AI review. Your name and email are stored only if you ask us to email the report.
Is the report free?
Yes. The audit, PDF report, checklist and prompt tester are free. If you want help fixing what it finds, you can request a free growth audit from our team.
